JOHN WIKANE
playwright & sound designer
Born in Wilmington, DE, John Wikane is an NYC-based Playwright and Sound Designer. He found his start in the theatre at an early age, being cast as Daddy Warbucks in Annie Jr. After an unfortunate experience with a bald cap, John decided something behind the scenes would be a good change of pace. Quickly, his love for writing found a new home in the theatre, where John began to write short plays for his classmates (bald cap free). In college, this love has grown again, this time into a deep appreciation for the theatrical process and new play development. In his spare time, John runs Fordham’s first ever playwriting club, helping young students nurture their own love of the craft.
In his writing, John focuses on exploring the complexities of the queer experience, blending comedy with radical empathy to invite the audience to question their lives outside the theatre. As a queer artist with a political background, he aims to use his work to not only spark personal change, but change in the world around him. When he sound designs, John prioritizes work that is smaller and more intimate, where the sound can be felt just as much as it is heard. Outside of playwriting & design, John can be found onstage, reading a fantasy novel, and playing with his cat.
