IAN RIOS-VASQUEZ

SCENIC DESIGNER/PRODUCTION MANAGER

Hey there! My name is Ian Rios-Vasquez, and I am a queer Colombian theatre artist,  scenic designer, carpenter, and production manager based in New York City. I love exploring and learning about worlds, both new and old. I want to create art that uplifts voices that go unheard; art that brings smiles, love, and hope into the world. I want to share the joy I get from learning of others’ experiences with the world. Through this act and using theatre as my medium, I see the potential theatre has to foster the blossoming of community. With this community, I aim to help tell as many stories as I can and inspire as many people as I can.
As a theatre artist, I love building worlds not only for the stage, but also for connecting artists in an act of community. I pride myself on my collaborative process, where I not only ensure cohesion between me and my fellow artists but also ensure everyone’s experience is enjoyable, safe, and fulfilling. I love the collaborative process because it is where we, as people and artists, get to start a new stage in our artistic growth. I always find myself learning something new during the process. My favorite example of this comes from my time working as the set designer for a production of Sagittarius Ponderosa by MJ Kaufman. I designed the set to be built with cardboard and scrap wood, all donated by the Fordham theatre community, with the intention of exploring eco-sustainability in theatre. With every donation, I felt our sense of community grow. Seeing how those same people smiled and pointed out their contributions to their friends before watching the show reaffirmed my belief that theatre is a powerful tool for connection and growth.
